Sleeping Beauty has been a beloved Disney princess for decades. Disney made Sleeping Beauty famous in 1959, but the story is very old. There have been several carnations of this story; the original dating back to 1528.  Actually parts of the story date back even further to 12th Century Nordic mythology.It was called  “Perceforest” and was quite racy and gory. In fact, most of the early versions of the story would not be suitable for children. It’s next carnation was in 1697 by French writer Charles Perrault. The English translation is “The Beauty Asleep in the Wood“.

The Brothers Grimm version in 1812 was more tame although not as sweet as the Disney version.

The Disney version takes place in the 14th century. A baby princess named Aurora is born to King Stefan and Queen Leah. As was the custom in those days she was betrothed to Prince Phillip who was the son of King Hubert to unite their kingdoms together.

On her Christening Day, the three Good Fairies are ready to give their gifts to the baby. Two of the fairies, Fauna and Flora give her a beautiful singing voice, and beauty. The third Merryweather is interrupted by the evil fairy Maleficent. She curses the baby because she was upset that she was not invited to the ceremony. The curse is that Aurora will die before the sun sets on her 16th birthday when she pricks her finger on a spindle of a spinning wheel.

Although Merryweather cannot undo Maleficent’s curse, she is able to weaken it by saying the princess will not die but fall asleep until she is awakened by the kiss of her true love.

King Stefan made a law that all spinning wheels in the kingdom are to be destroyed. Unfortunately that will not be enough to protect the princess. So the three fairies took the baby away to the forest and raised her there. They dressed as peasants to disguise the fact that they are really fairies and they tell Aurora that they are her aunts. They also changed Aurora’s name to Briar-Rose.

By the  time her 16th birthday rolled around, Aurora had grown into a beautiful young woman, both inside and out. For her birthday, Aurora’s “aunts” decide to make her a cake and a gown. Being a total disaster, they turned to their magic instead which alerted Diablo, Maleficent’s raven, to  their magical powers. Of course, he flew off to inform Maleficent.

While all this is going on, Aurora is in the forest, gathering berries and talking to her animal friends. Prince Phillip road by (he is now a handsome young prince, of course) and spotted the beautiful peasant girl. They immediately fell in love. Aurora realized she needed to get home and ran off before finding out the prince’s name. Prince Phillip goes home and tells his father he wanted to marry the peasant girl he just met, even though he knew of his pre-arranged marriage.

Once Aurora returned to the castle, Maleficent used magic to lure Aurora into her trap. It’s a spinning wheel in the tower of the castle. Aurora, being in a trance caused by the evil Maleficent, touched the spindle on the spinning wheel, pricking her finger and fell into a deep sleep. The good fairies arrived and lay the sleeping princess on a bed. They put a spell on the whole kingdom causing everyone to fall asleep until the spell can be broken. Flora hears King Hubert try to tell King Stefan that Prince Phillip wanted to marry a peasant girl, and realized that Prince Phillip is who Aurora met in the forest. They went back to their cottage to find him but he is captured by Maleficent’s evil minions and is thrown in her dungeon.

The fairies snuck into the dungeon and freed Prince Phillip. After some battles with the evil minions,  and Maleficent, and with the help from the good fairies, Prince Phillip killed Maleficent. He then rushed to Aurora’s side and kisses her, thus removing the curse. Everyone wakes up and they all live happily thereafter.
